attra ATTRA, The National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service
ATTRA is a program developed and managed by the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT). Historically it was funded through a cooperative agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture's Rural Business-Cooperative Service. The recent federal budget cuts, however, have forced us to implement new funding measures to continue this service and cover the costs of providing this vital information. These measures include fees for certain publications our staff have produced over the years, and private contributions from friends and supporters. We promise to continue to provide high value information and technical assistance to farmers, ranchers, Extension agents, educators, and others involved in sustainable agriculture in the United States.

grow the change We believe that growing our own food is the most radical and effective way to promote social justice, equality and sustainability. Everyone, to some extent, can grow their own food. It makes even more sense for communities to grow their own food, sharing responsibilities and costs. It requires a restructuring of values, the kinds of values that are necessary for a consumer culture to wake up to the exploitation and poverty we perpetuate throughout the world. Our socially and environmentally exploitive food-culture perpetuates the very resource wars and poverty that concern so many of us. Growing food brings our environment sharply into focus; we learn how much we rely on healthy food, healthy soil and an healthy ecosystem. On our homestead, and in this blog, we practice and advocate human-scaled food systems, with an intimate hands on approach, as a way for everyone on this earth to be nutritiously and sustainably fed, from the first world to the third world. Our diverse, closed-loop homestead is to us, a relevant form of protest, as well as a constructive way to build a sustainable future. We are all in this together. Not one of us lives on this earth alone.

navdanya Navdanya means “nine seeds†(symbolizing protection of biological and cultural diversity) and also the “new gift†(for seed as commons, based on the right to save and share seeds In today’s context of biological and ecological destruction, seed savers are the true givers of seed. This gift or “dana†of Navadhanyas (nine seeds) is the ultimate gift – it is a gift of life, of heritage and continuity. Conserving seed is conserving biodiversity, conserving knowledge of the seed and its utilization, conserving culture, conserving sustainability.
Navdanya is a network of seed keepers and organic producers spread across 16 states in India.
Navdanya has helped set up 65 community seed banks across the country, trained over 5,00,000 farmers in seed sovereignty, food sovereignty and sustainable agriculture over the past two decades, and helped setup the largest direct marketing, fair trade organic network in the country.
Navdanya has also set up a learning center, Bija Vidyapeeth (School of the Seed) on its biodiversity conservation and organic farm in Doon Valley, Uttarakhand, North India.
Navdanya is actively involved in the rejuvenation of indigenous knowledge and culture. It has created awareness on the hazards of genetic engineering, defended people's knowledge from biopiracy and food rights in the face of globalisation and climate change.
Navdanya is a women centred movement for the protection of biological and cultural diversity.

plants for a futurePlants For A Future (PFAF) is a charitable company, originally set up to support the work of Ken and Addy Fern on their experimental site in Cornwall, where they carried out research and provided information on edible and otherwise useful plants suitable for growing outdoors in a temperate climate. Over time they planted 1500 species of edible plants on 'The Field' in Cornwall, which was their base since 1989. Over ten years ago, Ken began compiling a database, which currently consists of approximately 7000 species of plants.

temperate climate permaculture"In my years of studying about Permaculture, I have often been a bit frustrated with the majority of the authors. They are all living and writing and designing in the tropics and sub-tropics, or are doing amazing things in arid climates. I plan on living in a temperate climate... where it snows occasionally... where I can't grow bananas!
While there are a few books, and it seems more every year, that touch on Permaculture in a Temperate Climate, many of them are about the general principles of Permaculture. Few of them get into the weeds, so to speak, of the actual implementation. I have found bits and pieces of very good information but never a good central clearinghouse for this information.
Permaculture is about design, and it is not about specific, cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all solutions. However, sometimes, examples of projects that work, and that I can apply where I live, would be nice. That is what this website is all about. Applying Permaculture design principles where I live, or where I plan on living as soon as I get the chance!
As Permaculture is about design, just about anything that deals with gardening, farming, homesteading, and self-sufficiency can be viewed through the lens of Permaculture. You will find all that here on this site.
One of the things that I am good at is taking a lot of information from a lot of different sources, separating the wheat from the chaff, and condensing that information into an easy to read format.
The main goal I have with this site is to get information that I feel is important in one place for myself and others to read and to reference. I hope one day to incorporate more hands on material on this site, but for now I want to create as close to a single stop shop as possible for information on Temperate Climate Permaculture."

soil and health libraryThis website provides free e-books, mainly about holistic agriculture, holistic health and self-sufficient homestead living. There are secondary collections about social criticism and transformational psychology. No fees are collected for this service.
The library's subject seemingly-diverse topic areas actually connect agricultural methods to the consequent health or illness of animals and humans, shows how to prevent and heal disease and increase longevity, suggests how to live a more fulfilling life and reveals social forces working against that possibility.

vegan organicFounded in 1996, the Vegan-Organic Network, VON, is an ambitious UK registered charity with an international network of active supporters. Our aims are to research and promote vegan-organic (also known as stockfree organic) methods of agriculture and horticulture throughout the world so that green, clean and cruelty-free food becomes widely available.
Vegan-organic/stockfree organic broadly means any system of cultivation that excludes artificial chemicals, livestock manures, animal remains from slaughterhouses, genetically modified material and indeed anything of animal origin such as fishmeal.
From large farms to window boxes, we show farmers and home growers how to use vegan-organic methods. Our supporters include people of many viewpoints, some involved in growing food, some not, but all united in recognising the need for a fundamental restructuring of food production methods and land use and their importance for human well-being, for animal welfare and biodiversity and in the battle for environmental sustainability.
We publish a magazine “Growing Green Internationalâ€. There is also a free advice service for members of the public, home growers, smallholders and farmers. Through our Stockfree Organic Services wing, farms can be certified as Stockfree Organic; our Stockfree Organic Standards are inspected by the Soil Association in the UK and QCS in North America. We organise farm walks, allotment and garden visits and volunteer placements on stockfree organic holdings, publish guides for farmers and home growers, support higher education in our methods and as they say, much more.
